Format a number in scientific notation (unit-free) for a table cell.

Renders identically-shaped magnitudes so a column is scannable and aligns: 584 -> 5.8×10², 103398 -> 1.0×10⁵, 127797526 -> 1.3×10⁸. Mantissa is 2 significant figures. The UNIT belongs in the column header (e.g. bytes), not the cell – keeping cells numeric is what lets them right-align cleanly.
